The Abide Cap
Abide brings your snapback cap into the 21st century by connecting it to your smartphone. Customize your look with looping animations from your phone or our app community.
Background
The Abide Cap is the second concept by Pins Collective. In it we wanted to make a display that was more integrated into the garment than pin. We also wanted to improve the areas that we'd received feedback about from our existing users.
Work
The weakest part of Pin One was the display. A reflective LCD that didn't have the brightness, contrast and colors that the users wanted. So we traveled to a world display fair in Los Angeles to source a new display, and found it. An small AMOLED screen witch vidid colors and low power consumption.
With the display in place we adjusted our existing component stack, made a demo board and created a estimated volume design that would fit the electronics.
With a rough volume we then researched different ways to attach the screen to the cap. We wanted to make the screen removable so the user would be able to move it between different caps (and in the future to new garments). We looked into several solutions like well-crow, bajonett attachments and a elastic rubber ring. After some experimentations we landed with the rubber ring solutions and could adjust the design accordingly.
We then moved on to create presentation material and assets for the upcoming crowdfunding campaign.
Outcome
The project resulted in functional and volume/look prototypes along with a price estimation for mass production.
We used these assets to create a crowdfunding campaign during the fall 2018. The goal being to get the funding to take the product to mass production and to test the price point. The campaign was less successful than we hoped for and needed to go to mass production, so we returned the pledged money to our backers.
